LSOF: Heart and Mind

I will begin by a thought. I was reading John 3:1-15 today.
It has to do with Nicodemus and his conversation with Jesus.

Nicodemus was a man held in high regard by the Jewish council, but to us, we will see him as any ordinary person.

Here is why:

Nicodemus believed that Jesus came from God, actually let me word that differently, He had knowledge that Jesus came from God.

” Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform that miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with you.’

But you will see, the knowledge was very slight.

Jesus told Nicodemus, that He must be ” born again” to see the kingdom of God.

And Nicodemus out of his own worldly sense of things answers,

” How can a man be born again if he was old? Surely he cannot enter the womb again.”

I don’t know about you, but I would have loved to see Jesus face.

But the thing about it that caught me as I was reading. Nicodemus was pretty bold.

Boldness comes from the heart, and not from the mindset. Its something about his personality that clearly stands out.

A part of his personality that I don’t know about you, but reminds me of myself at times with God.

I have a big problem slowing down, I want to know all there is to know, I want it to hit me like a tidal wave, but the problem with that. A tidal wave will overwhelm you.

I get overwhelmed.

God knows this about me, and sometimes He will take something away, regardless of what it is, just so I can ” breathe in” what He is trying to show me.

Kind of like when I was walking the beach years ago, and I found a shark tooth. So I was pretty amazed, and started to walk back towards my mom. Well, I looked down again in the sand. I see somethingelse that looks like a shark tooth 5 seconds later. So I pick it up, I examine it, and notice what I found the first time wasn’t a shark tooth, the one I just found, truly was.

I felt it was as if God was walking with me, saw what I picked up, and was like,

” Okay, she has no clue, let me show her what one truly looks like. Ang, THAT is a real shark tooth, the one in your hand before, has no importance, its a stray shell, broken to pieces, but you thought it was real, and I was going to stop you from believing that, because I love you enough to not just tell you the truth, but show you. ”

Jesus began speaking again to Nicodemus after his first reply.

” I tell you the truth, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless He is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to the spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ” YOU, must be born again, the wind blows wherever it pleases, you can hear its sound, but can’t tell where it is coming from, the same with everyone born of the Spirit.”

I think Nicodemus scratches his head at this point.
” How can that be?”

I love how Jesus answers next, and it should be a wake up call for all of us.

” You are Isreal’s teacher, and you do not understand these things? I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken of earthly things and you do not believe, how then will you believe if I spoke of heavenly things?”

Jesus is sort of saying, ” I told you the sky was blue, but you have been taught to believe its green. So this is what you are teaching my people, you are misguiding them, because you have head knowledge, and do not know how to apply words to your heart.”

Its important to ask questions, and ask WHERE it says what in the bible. But its also important to really read it over a couple of times, and use commentaries. Don’t be afraid to open one more book to help you, actually, I should say don’t get lazy to open another book.

Because I’ll tell you something, Just like Nicodemus, our Preacher’s don’t have all the ” right” answers either, we need to find them for ourselves, and see how they apply to our life.

The WORD is life!!!!
